Moranbah mums find peace of mind with Lactation Consultant
Date: 14 February 2022
Moranbah mums have found comfort and confidence after attending a lactation event hosted by local organisation Oasis Life Lounge, thanks to a $3,000 Stanmore Resources Isaac Plains Community Grant received last year.
Oasis Life Lounge hosted the first event of its kind, welcoming Lactation Consultant Julie Snee to a two-day workshop for new and expecting mums looking for guidance on their motherhood journeys.
Julie has a passion for helping mums in regional areas after living and raising her own four children in Middlemount, and travelling to Moranbah and surrounds for years meeting with mums. Throughout her travels, she identified significant struggles for women when it comes to feeding time.
Oasis Life Lounge Co-ordinator Annette Attard said the event focused on breastfeeding, and the signs associated with postnatal depression and importantly when to seek help.
“The event allowed the Lounge to stay true to the vision of offering a safe space for local mums to come and find support in their journeys of successful breastfeeding which leads to better mental health, more connected mums and bubs, and ultimately happier families,” Annette said.
“The group not only found a safe set of ears and knowledge in Julie, but they also formed key friendships with each other.”
The grant from Stanmore Resources made it possible for Oasis Life Lounge to bring Julie to Moranbah without having to place significant costs onto attendees.
“Young families are already paying for accommodation and travel to leave Moranbah to have their babies. The grant enabled us to bring Julie to the region, and supply a beautiful morning tea and lunch for our mothers,” Annette said.
“In attendance we had seven first-time mums-to-be and one first-time mum of a four-month-old — they all learnt so much about the journey they are on with their new babies and we hope to host another event soon.”
